Honeymoon Beach Lunching in Romantic Zanzibar

Indecision is an energy-sapping and highly time-consuming malady, one which I am frequently afflicted by. Whether it has served me well to over-analyse every one of life’s important (and trivial) choices is up for debate but when I’m standing at a sandwich counter for twenty minutes because I just can’t make my lunch selection, that’s when I wish I was that wee bit more decisive.

My favourite travel photo

When Kelly got in touch asking me to ponder over my favourite travel photo for this month’s travel blog link up, you can imagine how engorged the rivers of ditheriness became. It was bank breaking. And I’m not talking about money.Β  Where on earth do I possibly start? Favourite country? Can’t decide that. Favourite sight? Can’t decide that either. Favourite photo? Nope. 3rd time unlucky.romantic beach lunch Brrezes resort Zanzibar

So I thought about some of my favourite moments instead and I carved ever deeper into my subconscious to remember some of the days that left me feeling as fuzzy as a wild dandelion. And a few musings later, unsurprisingly, honeymoon memories bubbled up from that box in my grey matter labelled ‘Africa’, the one I cherish so deeply.

A Romantic Beach Lunch at Breeze’s Beach Club, Zanzibar

This photo was taken on the marshmallow-soft, dove-white sands of the Breezes Beach Club Resort. Twigs, bamboo and palm leaves were interwoven to form a shady gazebo with exotic and illuminating flowers marking the contours like a child’s felt-tip pen. The eternally smiley staff spent a couple of hours erecting it prior to our lunch.

We had opted for one seafood platter with fresh lobster fit for a king and one vegetarian platter with generous chunks of mixed vegetables and paneer, highlighting the influence of Indian flavours in Zanzibari cuisine.beach lunch seafood vegetarian platter Zanzibar

We ate lunch with our feet cocooned in the sand and our palms interlocked. The low tide kept us dry but the breeze that lends its name to the resort was palpable. The private lunch left us feeling pampered on a stretch of coastline untouched with the exception of one couple passing by, transiently turning their heads with curiosity. flowers palm leaves gazeboWhen we returned to the beach that evening for the final time before flying home to start our new married lives, the gazebo was gone with no evidence of its existence. Was it all a figment of our imagination? It was certainly the stuff of dreams. But that’s where technology asserts its role and two matrimonial years later, the photos give our memories the clarity to live out those idyllic moments once more.

  1. That seafood platter looks amazing and the gazebo is so cute! What a beautiful honeymoon memory and something you will remember forever.

Zanzibar has the best food, everything is so fresh and oh my goodness the taste is out of this world. I don’t think I have tasted pineapple that good again in my life!

P.S. It’s perfectly acceptable to stand at the sandwich counter for twenty minutes, I do it all the time until I almost faint due to lack of food xx

Hehe, Thanks Kelly, I’m reassured to hear I’m not the only one with the indecisive sandwich problem πŸ˜€ I agree about the fruits in Zanzibar – for me, it was the enormous passion fruit and waking up to fresh passion juice every morning – I’d fly back just for that luxury!! x

  2. The sand looks so beautiful and the colour of the sea is that amazing blue that you get in very few places. Zanibar is on my bucketlist alongside a safari. http://www.loveandlimoncello.com

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 2, 2014 — 8:25 pm

Thanks so much for commenting – you know, I had forgotten how blue the sea was until I put up these photos again πŸ™‚ I hope you get a chance to go and yes, I agree about safari – the first part of our honeymoon was a safari in Tanzania (my first one) and it was just fantastic! I know I’m biased but I’d definitely recommend bumping it up as high as possible on your bucket list!! πŸ˜€

  3. What a beautiful setting. No wonder it i memorable.

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 2, 2014 — 8:26 pm

Thanks so much πŸ™‚ The beaches were so beautiful but I also loved Zanzibar because there was also so much culture, history and fantastic smells from all the spices that it’s famed for!

  4. This looks amazing! Such a beautiful place for a honeymoon! I went to Zanzibar but it was part of a long overland trip through Africa so we weren’t exactly staying in the most luxurious place. May have to suggest to hubby that we go back to see a different side to Zanzibar!

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 2, 2014 — 8:29 pm

Thanks so much lovely πŸ™‚ Such a beautiful island isn’t it?! Definitely drag him back – I’ve been thinking the same thing about Thailand – when I went years ago, I went super budget and I think it’s high time I go back and see it through a whole different lens!!

  5. Ooh looks gorgeous, that turquoise sea looks very inviting!

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 2, 2014 — 8:29 pm

Thank you so much πŸ™‚ The water was so warm as well – I miss it!!

  6. LondonKiwiEmma July 1, 2014 — 8:45 pm

I’m exactly the same, how does anyone manage to pick something, even just for lunch? I digress.

This sounds heavenly, the perfect crown to a honeymoon!

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 2, 2014 — 8:32 pm

Thanks Emma – you’re certainly all making me feel a lot better about the amount of time I spend dithering over lunch choices – now I just need to convince my other half that it’s normal to weigh up pros and cons over a sandwich choice! πŸ˜€ The beach lunch was a lovely final treat to the honeymoon – it was nice having this month’s theme to remind me of those moments!

  7. That seafood platter looks great! And what an amazing backdrop to enjoy it. I’m jealous!

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 2, 2014 — 8:34 pm

Awww thank you so much, Zanzibar was beautiful πŸ™‚ The platters were delicious (but absolutely enormous!) Despite our best efforts, there was so much we couldn’t finish because even after these 2 platters, they then brought out 2 huge plates of freshly cut fruit and we felt so bad for having to leave some!

  8. Hi lovely!

I also felt so much indecision when I heard the topic (also – sandwich selection IS tough!). I think you chose some lovely photos.

Zanzibar looks like such a stunning place, and I kick myself constantly for not exploring more of Southern Africa when I lived there. I will amend that some day πŸ˜‰

It was so great to meet you in person last week xxx

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 2, 2014 — 8:37 pm

Hey Kasha! Hope you’ve had a good trip & so glad you like these pics! I’m glad you struggle with sandwich choices too – it seems with all the other struggling sandwich-choosers on this thread, we could all organise a nice group lunch at a cafe without feeling any time pressure to make our choices! I know what you mean about not exploring more in the area – I kind of feel I’m just the same with places in England to be honest, which is something I’m trying to work on! It was so great to meet you too and I’ll send you a message regarding arranging another meet up! x

  9. What a magical memory and gorgeous shot! I love that it wasn’t there anymore before you took off. Just for the two of you. So romantic. I am dying to get back to Africa – traveling elsewhere just isn’t the same. Very happy to have come across your blog πŸ™‚ – Jess (a fellow frequent indecision victim)

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 2, 2014 — 8:39 pm

Jess, thank you so much for these kind words – really made my day πŸ™‚ This was my only ever trip to Africa, venturing to mainland Tanzania for safari first then this but I know what you mean – there was just something about the feel of the place, which I’ve never felt before – just really bonded with it and would LOVE to go back! I really liked how beautiful it was just being temporarily put up and really just made of plants, flowers and twigs – just goes to show that you don’t need fancy restaurants or chandeliers sometimes to have the most romantic lunches and dinners! Thank you for reading!

  10. Beautifully bright photos of a gorgeous place!

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 2, 2014 — 8:41 pm

Thank you Sara – this was long before I’d ever heard of things like Instagram so there’s no editing in them, as it was actually just that colourful! It’s been nice on this link up, having an excuse to go back through old photos and re-live some nice memories πŸ™‚

  11. What a magical experience!! I’ve been wanting to go to Zanzibar ever since I heard about it. Hopefully someday I’ll get there.

And don’t worry, I suffer from severe indecision too. If we did meet up, we’d probably spend ages not deciding what to eat!!

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 5, 2014 — 10:13 pm

Hahaha! That’s so true! Sounds like we’d have bonded over our indecision to choose sandwiches and cake! πŸ˜€ Hope you get a chance to see Zanzibar, it really is so beautiful – I’d wanted to go for such a long time and honeymoon seemed like a perfect excuse!

  12. Shikha, What a gorgeous place to eat a beautiful lunch!

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 5, 2014 — 10:14 pm

Thanks so much Corinne – it was certainly the most picturesque lunch I’ve ever had! πŸ™‚

  13. I want to spend there my honeymoon!!!!!!!! It may happen in 10 or 20 years, but I’m adding it to my bucket list! Absolutely stunning!

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 5, 2014 — 10:17 pm

Thanks so much Agness! It’s so beautiful but there’s also so much history, culture, spices on the island as well so it’s a lovely choice for combining all of those things with great beaches and relaxation – I’m biased obviously but I definitely agree it’d be a great choice for a bucket list! πŸ™‚

  14. Zanzibar is one of the places that just looks so beautiful! What a great place for a honeymoon! Love the Gazebo too, so pretty! And that feast looks divine! πŸ™‚

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 7, 2014 — 12:08 am

Thank you Emma – we really loved it, both the beauty on the beach and also how welcoming the people were! The feast was divine but just so enormous that we felt so bad leaving so much of it but would have probably sank into the sand if we had tried to eat it all πŸ˜€ Thanks for reading!

  15. What a wonderful and delicious memory! I knew nothing about Zanzibar, it looks really inviting.

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 7, 2014 — 12:10 am

One of the reasons I love reading travel blogs is finding out about places I knew nothing about or often have never even heard of so I’m delighted you’ve got a little glimpse into the beaches of Zanzibar – it’s certainly ideal for a slightly offbeat but beautiful beach destination but there’s also a lot of culture and history associated with it!

  16. My lord that looks just divine!!! … That’s all I can say πŸ™‚

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 7, 2014 — 12:23 am

Thank you!! Appreciate you reading and commenting! It was stunning – absolutely no photo editing or playing around with pictures necessary because the sand was that white and the photo that blue πŸ™‚

  17. That’s amazing! I love this! I’m actually planning a reunion with some friends who are abroad in Zanzibar and this is making me drool of excitement! And such wonderful memories too! It was definitely the same for me when I tried to decide which picture to take, it had to be pertaining to a good memory!

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 15, 2014 — 3:07 pm

I completely recalling great memories is a good place to start when it comes to picking photos! If you do get to go, I’m sure you’ll love Zanzibar – the beaches are every bit as beautiful as in these photos and the town is fascinating, cultural and full of history. Thanks so much for commenting πŸ™‚

  18. A tough decision indeed! And a beautiful destination – I have always dreamed of going to Zanzibar!

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 15, 2014 — 3:34 pm

Thanks Natasha πŸ™‚ I too had always dreamed about seeing it – always sounded so remote and intriguing so for once, I managed to make a quick decision when it came to choosing honeymoon destination! Hope you get a chance to go one day!

  19. Looks wonderful! We’ll be in Zanzibar in a few weeks after a climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro and some safari time and can’t wait for some relaxing time on the beach!

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 15, 2014 — 3:35 pm

How fantastic! I’m sure the trek will be hard work but very rewarding and you’ll definitely have earned yourself some beach time on these beautiful white sands πŸ™‚ Good luck with the climb Jessica and thanks for stopping by!

  20. Oh my, I’m not surprised that top photo is your favourite. That looks like paradise to me!!!

    1. Shikha (whywasteannualleave) July 15, 2014 — 4:01 pm

I hadn’t looked at these photos for a while so I wasn’t sure if the novelty would have worn off but taking one look at them, I was dreaming myself straight back there – it really did look like a paradise island but one full of culture and interesting markets, history etc πŸ™‚
